Following On Blogger

I’ve received a few emails over the last couple of weeks from readers who were used to following my old Blogger blog from within their own Blogger dashboards, and who now can’t tell when I’ve posted something new here because there’s no “Follow” widget on my new site.

If you come into this category, and would like to make my blog updates appear in your Blogger reading list, it can be done.  You just have to add this site’s address manually to your reading list: it’s very easy, and will only take you a minute. Here’s how you do it.

First, go to your Blogger dashboard and scroll down until you can see your own reading list.  At the bottom of that section you’ll see two buttons: “add” and “manage”.  Click on the “add” button: your screen will go pale and a dialogue box will open which is titled, “Step 1: Add Blogs To Follow”.

Make sure the first option, “Add from URL”, is selected and in the box below it, type in the URL for my blog, which is “http://howpublishingreallyworks.com” (only without the quote-marks).  Then click on the “next” button, and you’ll be asked if you want to follow publically or anonymously. Then click “finish”, and you’re done. From then on, all the posts I make on this blog will appear in your reading list, so you need never miss one again.

There. I told you it was easy. Now all I have to do is work out how to work the trick in reverse, so I can follow all of you lot from my nice new WordPress dashboard. There has to be a way.

You do realise Jane darling that you are attempting to herd cats here…we will do as we are told because we want to!

I do hope you want to follow me–I love your comments. This new site is much more useful in all sorts of ways, but I still feel a little disconnected from the community which had built up around my old Blogger blog. It’s lovely to see people arriving here, though, bit by bit.

Following a non-blogspot blog on blogspot is a bit of a faff, and this is the main reason I’m sticking with blogger. Do you think this is wise, or are there several benefits from having a site of your own (I already my own website)? Any advice gratefully received.

PS. I took your advice and called ‘How I Came to be in England’ ‘The Englishman’ when sending it to an agent, and she was immediately interested. So thank you for pointing out the obvious flaw in my manuscript all that time ago, when I didn’t even realise it was going to be a full-length MS.

Helena, it’s very easy to add this URL to your reading list with Blogger–it takes just a few seconds and isn’t much of a faff at all, really.

I’ve found all the various plugins that are offered by WordPress to be invaluable: I’ve had a LOT of troll and spam problems, and their comments and strangenesses are much easier to deal with on WordPress. It’s a steep learning curve, but it is a very useful one.

And thank you for your kind words–I’m glad I was a help! How are you going now with your submissions? Any closer?

Once I figured out you moved (took awhile lol) I simply added this link to my sidebar so anytime you update it shows a new post.

    Jane,

I now submit very infrequently to just two agents who seem to like my writing, and then wait for responses. Not sure this is the best way, but I don’t think it’s in me to cope with 60 rejection letters a la Ms Kathryn Stockett.

PS. The word verification is ‘indication sneaking’ – is it trying to tell me something?

Bah! I expect to be littered with choccies and margaritas as notification to a new blogpost!

I followed you here from the moment you moved–you’re on my blog home page and can tell whenever you’ve posted something new. And if I(techno-dinosaur that I am)can do it so can anyone else.

You’ll have to try a lot harder than that, Smith, to get rid of me.

Karen! Hello! Haven’t seen you in AGES! I’m glad you’re still dropping in: how’s things?

And Zigmond: thank you. As if I’d try!

[Damn. She found me again. Must think of new way to escape her clutches!]

Thank you for this information. Now I know how to fix it!
